Opened up the blog for comments

Oh, and by the way, I opened up the blog for anonymous / non-registered comments, so leave your mark or say hello in the game. I'm on the Argent server / Defiant.

Enjoy this picture of me and Sery pimping a wardstone!

Travelling in Rift

I enjoy travelling in Rift. There are two main ways of getting around - teleports that take you to a central area of each region, or huffing it on foot / horse. The transportation system isn't overly developed and there is still a lot of walking, which I appreciate. It helps mantain the immersion and creates an actual world rather than a few disconnected islands. I especially like how the artifact hunt keeps you riding between locations, even when you could have teleported!

There is also a lot to discover. Yesterday I visited this wonderful place called Grey Gardens. It was rainy and grey and yet full of color and light. It wasn't quite time yet to stay and hang out, but I am really looking forward to getting to know this area better.

Instead, I ventured back to the Scarlet Gorge with Sery. We scaled the cliffs in the north and found this place called Lover's Leap - a cliff edge extremely high up above a waterfall with a pool below. I tried to convince Sery to strip for the jump, but he wouldn't hear of it. Pansy. I stripped on my own and prepared for the jump. I'm a plate-wearer, I'm NOT about to take a 100 meter leap into a basin wearing my own weight in metal. That would be slightly dumb.

Anyway, we both survided the fall and cashed in an achievement for the jump - hooray!

It was greta fun and we decided to celebrate by doing some senseless slaughter of the local wildlife in Scarwood Reach.

Charge in

What have I been up to these last few days you ask? Well, aside from being clobbered by a touch of the common cold, I have been riding around exploring and gathering artifacts. It it such a peaceful way of life.

On one of my forays I came across this place called Vestige and outside it a man asked me to clear it out. I was feeling pretty buff and although he recommended a party for this gigantuan task, I figured, hey, I'm a tough tank girl in all new purple armor. I have braved the Scarlet Gorge, I've killed the titans of Stonefield... I can huff and puff and blow out these little flames of Freemarsh!

Yeah.

So I ran in, aggroed everything in sight and started hammering away. I quickly noticed that something was wrong with my health. It kept dropping. Astounished, I pulled a lay on hands on myself and kept hammering.
About two seconds later, I started running and died right outside the wall.

Well, no one remembers a coward!

I retrieved my body and tried again, a bit more careful this time. However, the flames seems to remember me from before and after killing one of them, I was ambushed by two big guys who toasted me. Again.

I am a bit embarrassed now.

Well, no more time for blogging, here goes my third attempt! CHARGE!

Thomas the Troll opens a Rift

I woke up in a bad spot this morning. I must have had a brain fart last night, because I decided to swim straight out past Meridian to this nice beach I spotted across the water. It was inhabited by creatures so wicked that I couldnät even judge exactly how out of my league I was. Scraping myself off the beach with my soul in critical condition and managing to porting back to Meridian on my final breath, I swore to take my vacations in the cold mountains in the future.

And, after some much needed healing and some light artifact hunting, off to the mountains I went. It was full of trolls (just like the Internet) and some chump living in a tent asked me to kill them. Why not? I'm obviously nuts already, why not dedicate my day to thinning the troll population of the Stonefield mountains?

Off on a killing spree I went. Of course, my war on the trolls was interrupted by some Rifts opening. Earth Rifts this time... and out poured... TROLLS!

I don't really get it.

Why would the trolls need Rifts to visit their cousins when they are already hanging out all over these mountains? And where are they coming from? The next mountain? I can really picture it... the troll Teodor stands in his mountain valley and waves to the troll Thomas on the mountain top.
"Hey, get over here!" Teodor yells. "We're having a party down here!"
"Screw you, I don't want to walk all the way down there!" Thomas replies. "Come up, let's have a party here."
"We've got humans down here...!" Teodor yells. "The valley is full of these ascended chumps running about killing rams and mining tin. Come down, mate!"
"Well, all right," answers Thomas, but he still isn't to keen on the idea of walking down the mountainside. He has a bad hip, apparently. Instead he visits the local shaman who opens a Rift straight down into the valley. Other trolls on other mountaintops sees this and tags along.

Seriously, troll-dudes... if you are too lazy to walk down the mountain, no wonder you're getting slaughtered by low-level miners down here!

Exploration and horsies

I finally earned enough cash to buy myself some transportation! I didn't go for the collector's turtle, because I think they look silly and they just don't match my fierce nature. Instead, I went shopping for a regular horse until I can find something truly wicked. Right after I paid the merchant his steep fare, a Death Rift opened up almost on top of my head! I was fairly alone in the area, so I decided to flee (I mean, retreat) and find some help.

While waiting for backup, I decided to name my horse Larva. If you know the manga Miyu, you'll understand why. ;-)

Speaking of faithful companions, I also ventured into the Iron Tomb a second this, accompanied by this bard named Sery. His real-life counterpart is actually my fiancée, so I guess he can tag along when he wants to! He keeps me buffed and entertained, though I must admit his outfit looks a bit boring. Shouldn't bards wear gleeful purples and party greens?

Oh well, I scored a new shield with dragon decorations and afterwards I travelled back to Meridian to find myself some new armor. I got some new pieces and dyed them blue! I am totally in love with the way you can color and customize your outfits. It really adds something to the world for us role playing freaks, and everyone doesn't end up looking exactly the same!

After outfitting myself, I emptied my bags into the bank, put some runes and armor up for sale at the auction and headed north to this place called Stonefield. The atmosphere there was right up my alley - gloomy, rainy and dramatic in a low-key sort of way. It was quite lovely and it merged in a very natural way with the neighbouring Freemarsh.

I wandered around for a while, collecting some artifacts and slaughtering some of the local wildlife, but it wasn't long before another rift opened up right on top of my head (again!). Another Death Rift. Well, I lent my sword to the cause and repelled the invaders.

I wonder when I will see some other rifts? So far I have only seen Death and Water Rifts. I wonder what will come out of the other ones?

Anyway, enjoy this wonderful picture of a Rift opening in Stonefield. It's almost worthy of making my desktop!

Views, hair horrors and dungeons

Today was a rather long day. I took a swim in the ocean and saw this gorgeous view of Meridian...

...and I was the victim of an evil color bug that turned my hair lime green! ARGH, the horror!

After visiting my hairdresser in a panic and having her dye it back to purple/white, I could finally relax and get to the maiming of the day. We fought a few invasions and along with some friends, I made a trip into the Iron Tomb. A rather droll place decoration-wise if you ask me, but as an adventure it was more than satisfying. We did well, only died once, and I walked away with a new sword as well as a new belt to keep it in.

Best of all, I managed to keep the entire party (almost) out of danger during the run. I guess the tank combination I chose worked... though I still miss my consecration! Hmm, I seem to be suffering from the "WoW" debuff. I wonder when it will wear off?

It's too early for rifts

Okay, it's like 8 am on a sunday and I'm basically alone in Freemarsh. Deathrifts and Waterrifts are opening all over the place... tentacles are hanging from the sky like christmas ornaments. Am I the only early riser in Telara?

Get out of bed, guys! There is something that looks like C'thulu at the door, and I don't think he is delivering your breakfast...

Holy warrior without a God

Yesterday was such a day! I started my morning by sending some undead back to the underworld and practicing to express the different aspects of my soul through combat. I must admit that the three different callings that my soul answers to sometimes create some inner turmoil. Paladin... Reaver... Void Knight...

Well, as the story goes, I was more of a pure Paladin before my death. Then, being dead for so long, I brought back a touch of deathly magic and a darker side to my personality from the afterlife. I am still getting to terms with these conflicts - protecting through seeking death fearlessly and saving the innocents through dark powers.

The holiness that once was seems eradicated from my templar soul. The belief is gone but the powers remain. It is a quite interesting experience, being a holy warrior without a God.

With these musings in my head, I left the graveyards of Freemarsch and ventured into the city. Whatever calling my soul hears, above all I am female and in need of shopping and society. So I ventured into the City of Meridian and met this chick with really wierd hair. Is that the style? Should I abandon my white-sprinkled mohawk in order to be in this season?

Well, I am not changing my hair. It's fierce. And you can forget about me wearing a helmet! In fact, I went to the dye shop and bought some purple dye to make my armor match my coloring.

Shut up, you wish you were purple too!

Enter Miyu

So it was time for the sneak start launch. Yesterday I entered the world of Telara properly, as Miyu the warrior. She is, of course, named after the Vampire Princess Miyu, a tragic vampire girl in japanese anime/manga who chases demons along with her silent companion. For some reason certain shades of purple always remind me of Miyu and these shades turned up when I made my avatar in Rift.

Anyway, after being resurrected in the far future and fixing the time machine, I land in the lovely green land of Freemarch. I engage in the usual slaughter of innocent hostiles, fetch objects for people whose feet seem cemented to the ground and defeat Rifts whenever they open on top of my head. It's a way of life I guess. Furthermore, I made some friends and joined the guild The Black Hand. I also outfitted myself with this lovely red plate underwear set. Apparently, this will shield me from blows. I am a bit sceptical to the practical aspects of plate underwear, but the fashion is undeniable! Forces of evil, fear my exposed skin!

I wish I had some more tattoos to show off.

As for my talents, you'll notice the shield on my back. That is because I am a very self-sufficient person who does not sit around and have a coffee while monsters ravage the land. I run up to them and slam their faces, come hell or glory.

I have already died once. It didn't last, but it fucked up my self-preservation sense.

Trying out the world

So, I tried a warrior, a rogue, a mage, a cleric... ran through the noob area with all of them. Then I rerolled another warrior, pimped her with a twohander and started hacking away. Not entirely happy with my soul selections, but hey, it's a beta and the chars will be wiped before the real adventure begins.

I actually saw a lot of awesome stuff, including this apocalyptic rift forming overhead.

All in all, I am liking the world, the story and the graphics. The interface is almost exactly like Wow, but that's fine. In fact I like it - I've used it for 5 years and everything is familiar. It makes it very easy to learn this new game and I can focus on the story rather than struggling with new controls.

The chat in the starting area is worse than the Barrens chat, though, lol!

I have a good feeling about this...

Alright, here we go. First day of last cycle of Rift beta testing. So far it looks awesome. The interface is like World of Warcraft 2.0, and I like that. Why fix it if it isn't broken? I enter into a dark and wierd world full of gadgets and this funky hole in the sky, sprouting tentacles. These dudes want to send me back in time to save the world, but first I have to gather up some sould, kill some mobs and kill/save this angel warrior. Cool, let's roll!

This blog will follow my adventures in the Rift gaming world. We will start with a few days of beta and see where we go from there... now, I'll stop wasting my free beta time blogging and making nice pictures and go kill something with my awesome blades. Tentacle-thingies beware!
